What are the Amami World Heritage Trail?

The Amami World Heritage Trail (Amami Trail) is a long trail which links the Amami Islands.
With the people in the community, we have chosen courses where you can commune with nature and culture unique to Amami, including its subtropical forests, white sandy beaches, and villages with coral stone walls.
The Amami Trail aims to achieve the following:

  • Nurture the feeling of a link between nature and people.
  • Help the local community strengthen their pride in the region and energize the community.
  • Deepen the ties between the Amami Islands.

Rules of the Amami Trail

1. Look after nature.
Leave the animals and plants as they are and enjoy them in your memory and photos.
2. Do not leave your trash.
Be sure to keep trash with you on the trail. Also, try to pick up trash left by others so that everyone can enjoy the trail.
3. Stay on route.
Entering a grassy area causes damage to the plants and puts you at risk of being bitten by a Habu viper.
4. Be thoughtful.
Behave considerately towards other trail users. Be respectful toward the local people, remember that the villages are places where they live.

—Your safety is your responsibility.—

  • There are wild paths on the Amami Trail which are not maintained.
  • Cell phones may not receive signals in some areas.
  • Danger may occur unexpectedly, BEWARE!
  • Collect information from the trail map, the geographical map provided by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, the website and books, etc.
  • Make a trekking plan and be fully prepared for your trip.
  • In bad weather, postpone the trek and enjoy the island in other ways!
