This is a drill.
Sendai Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 reactor has experienced a critical failure which has
triggered the Alert emergency classification level under the Nuclear Emergency Response
Guideline. As a result, as of 7:30 am today, the national government has requested the
following:
1. Residents within the Sendai NPS PAZ requiring special care (*see note) should
prepare to evacuate with their caregivers. However, those who risk increased
health concerns by evacuating should prepare to shelter indoors with their
caregivers.
2. Preparations should begin to facilitate the evacuation of residents within the
Sendai NPS PAZ requiring special care: the opening of evacuation bus meeting
points, and necessary preparations for distributing stable iodine.
3. Preparations should begin for facilities to accept those who need to shelter
indoors, including as those who risk increased health concerns by evacuating
4. Temporary visitors within approximately 30 kilometers of the Sendai NPS should
return home.
5. Residents within the Sendai NPS PAZ and UPZ should pay attention to
information from disaster announcement systems, radio, TV, etc.
At this time, there are no abnormal readings from the environmental radiation monitoring
stations installed around Sendai Nuclear Power Station.
We will keep you informed as necessary, so please pay attention to information via disaster
prevention wireless broadcasts, radio, TV, emergency alert emails, Kagoshima Prefecture’s
Genshiryoku Bousai app, etc., and please calmly follow the instructions of your local
municipal government.
*Note: Persons requiring special care
Persons requiring special care are residents in the PAZ who should implement protective
measures such as early evacuation in the event of a Site Emergency, including:
1) Persons requiring special care as defined in Article 8, paragraph 2, item 15 of the Basic
Act on Disaster Management (Act No. 223 of 1961), who require additional time for
evacuation (excluding those who fall under (2) or (3) below).
2) Pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants, and those who need to evacuate with infants

PAZ (Precautionary Action Zone): within 5km of the Sendai Nuclear Power Station.
Parts of Satsumasendai City.
UPZ (Urgent Protective Action Planning Zone): within 5-30km of the Sendai Nuclear Power
Station.
Part of Satsumasendai City (excluding areas in the PAZ), the entirety of Ichikikushikino City,
the entirety of Akune City, part of Kagoshima City, part of Izumi City, part of Hioki City, part of
Aira City, part of Satsuma Town, part of Nagashima Town.
